WESTRIDGE ELEMENTARY PARKING LOT SAFETY

With the high volume of parents picking up students in the afternoons, parking lots at Westridge can be a dangerous place.  So that we can better provide for student safety, we ask all parents to cooperate with the following rules for dropping off and picking up students.

Parking lot use:
Please use only the front parking lot when dropping off or picking up students.  The back parking lot is for school busses only.  It is important to minimize congestion and keep the parking lot clear for busses to maneuver and drop off students safely.
When entering and leaving the front parking lot, please follow the enter and exit signs.  Traffic flow is one-way.  When exiting the front parking lot, there are two lanes: one for left turns, one for right.   Please be careful as you leave to watch for other cars that may be trying to cross your path to reach a different turn lane.

Student Drop-off:
When entering and exiting the front parking lot, stay in the drop-off lane next to the right-hand curb.  Please wait to drop off your child until you have reached the front of the school.  Do not park and leave your vehicle in the drop-off lane.  Other parents will be arriving.  Having parents driving around a vehicle blocking the drop-off lane creates a hazard for students and parents.  If you need to come in to school with your child, please park on the street in front of the school and use the sidewalk to come into the school.

Student pick-up in the afternoon:
Student pick-up in the afternoon is the most dangerous time in our parking lots for students due to all the traffic volume at one time.  This is the most difficult time for managing traffic and the time of day when parent cooperation with parking lot rules is most important.
Cars often begin lining up by 3:00 in the afternoon for pick-up.  By 3:33 when school dismisses, the line is often down the street.  While waiting in this line can be frustrating, it is very important for student safety to do so.
If you are planning to pick up your child without getting out of your car, please stay in the line and in the pick-up lane along the curb.  Teachers will be out on duty with students waiting for pick-up.  Watch for teacher directions.  You will be asked to pull as far forward as possible before stopping to pick up you child.  Do not stop and park in this lane.  Again this stops the flow of traffic and creates a dangerous situation.
If you need to park and get out of your car to get your child, please do not park in the center parking spaces.  This creates a dangerous situation with people crossing in front of traffic.  There have been close calls in the past when a car swerves out of the pick-up lane and around traffic when pedestrians are crossing between vehicles.  We need parents to help avoid this situation.  You may see some parents who have parked in the middle of the lot.  These are generally parents who have been working at Westridge that day or who have been volunteering in the school during the last hour of the day.
If you need to park to come into the school in the afternoon, please park on the street and use the sidewalk.  This keeps you and your child out of traffic or in a crosswalk.

Student safety is a major concern for us at Westridge Elementary.  These procedures have been developed, and are in place, for the safety of your child(ren).  We ask for and appreciate your help in keeping students safe.
